Pijp van de maand juni
Deze maand lichten we een bijzondere presentatie pijp uit. De pijp is maar liefst ruim 15 cm hoog, rijkelijk versierd en geëmailleerd. Zij is gemaakt door de Franse firma Gambier, ter gelegenheid van de ‘Exposition des produits de l'industrie française’ in 1849. Deze Nationale tentoonstelling werd dat jaar voor de 11e keer gehouden (sinds 1798) en had de vorm van een langdurige tentoonstelling waarbij gedurende 60 dagen Franse fabrikanten van industriële en agrarische producten de gelegenheid kregen om hun prestaties te tonen. Er deden maar liefst 5.494 bedrijven mee waaronder de firma Gambier. Tijdens dergelijke exposities werden heel wat onderscheidingen uitgereikt, waaronder ook een aan Gambier. Deze onderscheiding werd in november 1849 uitgereikt door Prince Louis Napoleon, de latere Napoleon III.
Afgebeeld zijn een man (‘kaster’), vrouw (‘tremster’) en kind (‘roller’) als werknemers van een pijpenfabriek. Op de kop lezen we de tekst ‘Pipes Gambier’ en de bovenkant is versierd met schelpen waarin pijpen en bloemen zijn aangebracht. Op de zijkanten zijn de voor- en achterzijde van de tentoonstellingsmedaille afgebeeld. Op de ene zijde lezen we de tekst PRODUITS (D’INDUSTRIE, niet leesbaar), AGRICOLE ET MANUFACTURE, EXPOSITION NATIONALE 1849, en op de andere zijde is een zittende vrouw afgebeeld met de tekst REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE. De verschillende onderdelen zijn geaccentueerd met meerdere kleuren emaille.
De hier afgebeelde pijp diende als presentatie- en pronkstuk voor deze tentoonstelling en werd ook in de jaren na de tentoonstelling nog geproduceerd toen hij vooral als etalagepijp gefungeerd zal hebben. De pijp wordt ‘Cinquantenaire’ genoemd, verwijzend naar het 50 jarig jubileum dat de tentoonstelling in 1849 vierde.

Pipe of the month june
This month we highlight a remarkable presentation pipe. It is 15 cm tall, highly decorated and has multi colour enamel. It was made by the French company Gambier, at the occasion of the 'Exposition des produits de l'industrie française’ in 1849. This exposition was held for the 11th time that year (since 1798) in the format of a 60-day exhibition, which allowed French manufacturers to display their industrial and agricultural products. The official number of companies that participated was 5.494, among which the pipe manufacturer Gambier. During such events, many commendations in the form of medals were awarded for exceptional products and presentations and Gambier was also one of the recipients. The medal was presented to the company in november 1849 by Prince Louis Napoleon, later Napoleon III.
The pipe shows the figure of a man, woman and child als employees in a pipe factory and the text 'Pipes Gambier'. The top part of the bowl has decorations shaped as shells with pipes and flowers. On both sides of the bowl, the two sides of a exhibitions medal can be seen. On one side it has the text PRODUITS (D’INDUSTRIE, unreadable), AGRICOLE ET MANUFACTURE, EXPOSITION NATIONALE 1849, and on the other side it shows a woman sitting and the text REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE. Several elements are highlighted with different colours of enamel.
This pipe was made as a presentation- and showpiece for this exhibition and was produced during several years after the exhibition and will have served as a display for shops and points of sale for Gambier pipes. The pipe is also called the 'Cinquantenaire', a reference to the 50 year anniversary of the exhibition in 1849.
