Deze maand een portretpijp van Robbert Burns uit de periode 1930-1955, gemaakt bij John Pollock & Co in Manchester.
Robbert Burns was de bekendste Schotse dichter en schrijver van liederen die hij in zijn moedertaal, het Schots, geschreven heeft. Iedereen kent zijn gedicht ‘Auld Lang Syne’. Burns die leefde van 1759-1796 begon met het schrijven van gedichten in 1783. Hij werd geboren in een arme boeren familie, maar kreeg wel een goede opleiding. Zijn eerste bundel werd in 1786 onder de naam ‘Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect’ uitgegeven. Hij werd vooral beroemd in Schotland en ter ere van zijn nagedachtenis wordt op zijn verjaardag, die nog jaarlijks door Schotten over de hele wereld gevierd wordt (Burns Supper), traditioneel een haggis (hét traditionele Schotse gerecht: schapenorganen gemengd met wat andere ingrediënten en dan gekookt in een schapenmaag) geserveerd, die ceremonieel onder begeleiding van doedelzakmuziek naar de tafel wordt gebracht. Burns werd van zijn poëzie niet rijk en moest zelfs terugkeren naar de boerderij van zijn ouders.
Edward Pollock begon in 1879 een pijpenmakerij in Manchester. Dit werd één van de drie grote pijpenmakerijen in Manchester met enorme exporten naar Amerika. Het bedrijf bleef drie generaties lang pijpen produceren. In 1990 sloot Edwards kleizoon het bedrijf. De hier afgebeelde pijp stamt uit de periode tussen 1930 en 1955, toen het bedrijf van Pollock al lang over haar hoogtepunt heen was. De kwaliteit van de afwerking is vrij slecht. Ook de gebruikte klei is grof van samenstelling. Vaak werden deze pijpen gelakt, zodat de slechte kwaliteit niet opviel.
Pipe of the month march
This month we highlight a pipe with the potrait of Robbert Burns, which was made by the company John Pollock & Co in Manchester between 1930 and 1955.
Robbert Burns was one of the most famous and well-known poets and writer of songs in his mother tongue, Scottish. Everyone will know his poem 'Auld Lang Syne'. Burns lived between 1759 and 1796 and started writing poetry in 1783. His parents were famers and not very well to do but they managed for Robbert to get a good education. His first bundle, titled 'Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect', was published in 1786. His fame and appreciation rose quickly, especially in Scotland. Every year on January 25th, his birthday, Scots all over the world will celebrate and commemorate Burns with a so called 'Burns supper' consisting of the traditional Scottisch 'Haggis' dish served to the table with traditional bag pipe music. Burns' poetry never made him a rich man and at a certain point in his life he was even forced to return to his parents farm.
In 1879, Edward Pollock established a pipe factory in Manchester which quickly grew to become one of the three big pipe making establishments in that city with large export business to the United States. For three generations, the company was active until 1990 when Edwards grandson decided to close it. This months pipe was made between 1930 and 1955, a period that already marked the decline of the business. The quality of the pipe's finishing is rather poor, as is the quality of the pipe clay that was used. These pipes were often lacquered in order to mask their poor quality.
